Weekly TD-SCDMA Update July 14-20

- The Vice Minister of MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), formerly known as the MII (Ministry of Information Industry), announced on July 17 that TD-SCDMA network coverage in 10 major Chinese cities has topped 95% so far, allowing subscribers to access TD-SCMDA services during the Beijing 2008 Olympics Games, Sina News reported. According to the report, foreign visitors will not be able to use their 3G mobile phones based on WCDMA and CDMA 2000 during the summer sporting event. However, they can rent TD-SCDMA mobile phones from China Mobile.

- Potevio, a Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer, announced on July 18 that it has signed a cooperation agreement with Italian MyWave Electronics SpA, whereby Potevio will help the latter to deploy a trial network in Europe leveraging China's own-developed TD-SCDMA technology, according to Sohu News. Deliverables include TD-SCMDA solutions, equipment, and related technical support. Potevio's TD-SCDMA equipment has been deployed in the TD-SCDMA networks in Qinhuangdao and Tianjin.

- According to Sohu News, Chinese telecom operator China Mobile and nine other companies have joined the TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance. Aside from China Mobile, which is the first telecom operator to join the Alliance, new members include China-based Smartphone maker Wuhan Dopod, Taiwan-based chipmaker Mediatek, state-owned China National PTAC (Postal and Telecommunications Appliances Corporation), Beijing Creative Century Information, Digimoc Telecom Technology, NTS Technology, Fujian Vtion Information and Technology, Hangzhou EB Information, and Wingtech Group.
